Does God Want Us to Pray?

Q: 1) Why does God want us to pray? 2) If God knows our heart, why do we need to “tell” God what’s in our heart?

A: Great question that is asked by probably hundreds of millions of people. It seems the idea of “God wanting…” anything is an anthropomorphic projection, (human characteristic projected upon God).

Let’s establish context: God is The Ultimate Constant, beyond all universes, formless, Infinitely Powerful (Omnipotence), all Knowing (Omniscience), Everywhere Present (Omnipresence), Unconditional Love, Benevolence, the Source of all creation whether an entity’s existence is formless (spirit) or has physical form. The Presence of God is the Source of creation. Rather, to use a crude metaphor, God is “like” our Sun. It simply radiates massive amounts of energy that seems to be the source of sustenance that feeds all life here on Earth. However, the degree of power is so far beyond our Sun. The Big Bang is too simplistic because creation continues each moment as new universes are continuously coming into form and expanding.

All that being said, we don’t need to inform God, the all-knowing, of anything. God already knows, because it is God that animates our life and is always Omnipresent. In humility, I feel we are changed when we speak the deepest things in our heart to God. The most powerful thing that God radiates is Love. As we choose to commune in the Silence, completely surrendered to the Holy Spirit we become transformed. Not that we compartmentalize, we invite God’s Love in everything we do. Our life becomes a prayer of goodness. Each person we encounter is an opportunity to radiate Love. As a result, our lives become filled with Joy. The more time we invite the Presence of God, the more naturally and easily love flows.
