What is meant by the 2nd coming of Christ?
Well, in the most conservative circles (literal interpretation of Bible scripture) Christians believe Jesus would re-appear to the world in a physical manifestation. Many believe it would mark the feared Judgment Day, when it is time to put down our pencils and turn-in our tests, the Final Exam is over. People would be separated, those that have asked Jesus, the Christ to be their Lord and Savior would go to heaven and all the others would be cast into the lake of fire for all eternity. Even when I was a missionary with a conservative church, I doubted God would cast a kind and loving person into hell because they did not surrender to Jesus. As consciousness evolves from the most fundamentalist sects of Christianity, such vivid lines of distinction dissolve. “Judge not, lest ye be judged.”
Matthew 24 & Luke 17 give vague descriptions of unrest and violence. The Greek word used in Matthew for the second coming is parousia. The word is often used to describe the entry of an authority figure to his station, (e.g., the king assumes the throne).
On the personal level or metaphysical understanding, the second coming is understood to be an internal experience. The second coming of Christ is the moment when one surrenders their life to God, no longer being entirely subject to the whims of the ego, as our internal throne is given to God. This is when Christians have decided to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.
